Artists’ Reception: Sunday, October 21st 2-4pm
About the exhibition:
This interactive exhibition, curated by artist/educators Lisa Simon and Skylar Smith, showcases new work by seven artists who are also new parents. The exhibit was born out of necessity: Simon and Smith found that their artistic practice and passion was being swallowed up by the demands of careers and family life. Searching for ways to balance art, family, and identity, and eager to connect to other creative people in the same predicament, they conceived of a project that would include a group exhibit, free family art workshops, and an accompanying catalog.
Beginning in October 2011, participating artists began a body of work that reflected on their pre-and post-child artistic identity. Throughout the year, the artists met to discuss their work in progress, and any challenges and/or surprises they encountered in both art-making and parenting. With Child: Art and Parenting endeavors to open a dialog about parenthood, sacrifice, compromise, and creativity while providing specific models for folding creativity into a busy life. Participating artists: Adrienne Callander, Alice Stone Collins, Shawn Hennessey, Aerie Meredith, Gibbs Rounsavall, Lisa Simon, and Skylar Smith.
